Can you have a lip lift if you have thin lips naturally?

If you were born with naturally thin lips, you may have assumed that surgical enhancement isn't for you — or that fillers are your only option. The good news is that a lip lift can be an excellent choice for thin lips, and in many cases, patients with less natural volume are among the most satisfied with their results. Here's what you should understand before deciding whether this procedure makes sense for you.

Why Thin Lips Can Actually Be an Advantage

It may sound counterintuitive, but naturally thin lips often respond beautifully to a lip lift. The procedure doesn't add volume the way a filler does — instead, it shortens the space between the base of the nose and the upper lip, allowing more of the existing pink lip tissue (the vermilion) to show. When lips roll slightly outward and upward, even modest natural volume becomes far more visible. Patients who have struggled for years with lip fillers that never quite delivered the look they wanted sometimes find that a lift achieves what injections alone could not, because it changes the position and proportion of the lip rather than simply inflating it.

How the Procedure Works

The most common technique is the subnasal (or "bullhorn") lift, in which Dr. Wells removes a small, carefully measured strip of skin just beneath the nostrils. The remaining skin is brought together, lifting the upper lip and increasing the amount of vermilion on display. The incision is hidden in the natural crease under the nose, so the resulting scar typically fades well over time. Other variations — such as a corner lift, which subtly upturns the corners of the mouth — may be recommended depending on your facial anatomy and goals. Because the procedure works with your existing lip tissue, results look natural and your lip movement is unaffected.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Thin lips alone don't disqualify you — but candidacy does depend on several factors. During your consultation, Dr. Wells will assess:

  • Philtrum length — the distance between your nose and upper lip; a longer philtrum usually means a lift will create a noticeable improvement
  • Tooth show — how much of your upper teeth is visible at rest, which helps determine how much tissue to remove
  • Facial proportions — how a lifted lip will balance with your nose, chin, and overall features
  • Skin quality and healing history — factors that influence scarring and recovery
  • Your goals and expectations — a lift enhances what you have; it won't transform thin lips into dramatically full ones on its own

Non-smokers, or those willing to stop smoking well before and after surgery, generally heal more predictably. Good general health and realistic expectations are also important.

What Recovery Looks Like

Recovery from a lip lift is relatively straightforward. You can expect some swelling and tightness in the first week, with sutures typically removed within five to seven days. Most patients return to work and social activities within a week or two, though strenuous exercise should wait a bit longer.

Scar Healing and Aftercare

The scar under the nose will appear pink at first and gradually soften and fade over the following months. Dr. Wells will give you detailed aftercare instructions, including how to keep the incision clean and when to resume your normal skincare routine.

Lip Lift, Fillers, or Both?

For patients with naturally thin lips, it's worth knowing that a lift and fillers aren't mutually exclusive. Some patients choose a lift to improve lip position and proportion, then add a small amount of hyaluronic acid filler later for extra volume and definition. Others find the lift alone delivers exactly the look they want. During your consultation, Dr. Wells will examine your anatomy, discuss your goals, and recommend a plan tailored to you — whether that's surgery, injectables, or a staged combination.

If you've been told your lips are "too thin" for anything but filler, it may be time to reconsider. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Neil Wells to find out whether a lip lift is right for you.
